Sacred Vale Tourism Initiative

Over 5,000 years ago our nomadic ancestors became settled farmers. They developed new skills and ways of living; modern civilization was born.

Throughout Britain, religious centres called henges were built, equivalent to our churches, but in the form of circular earthworks. Some were on a grand scale, large enough for thousands, and were visited by "pilgrims" from all over the land. In all Britain, the greatest of these were in the area between Catterick and Boroughbridge, in what has now come to be known as North Yorkshire's Sacred Vale.

The Sacred Vale is a hugely significant area in terms of our nations heritage. It stretches over 20 miles and creates a landscape of religious monuments stretching back in time for more than 5,000 years.

The Sacred Vale Tourism Initiative has been set up to showcase these monuments in order to ensure their continued recognition and preservation. The Sacred Vale is a new regional tourist destination and we to promote a sustainable and positive relationship between local businesses and the visitors to the area.

Sacred Vale work with local companies to create and market the Sacred Vale concept, we believe that be doing this we can create an environment that maximises the benefits increased tourist numbers across the region whilst minimising any negative impact on the community.
